Birding Outing: Sunday 15th January 2012 - Malolotja
Weather permitting, we intend setting off from the Malolotja gate at 05.30 a.m. and will do a combination of driving and walking. I will be doing a recce to find some different routes to give us a chance to find as many of the Southern African endemics as possible.
The Cisticolas will be in breeding plumage, giving us a better chance of identification so there is time to put your field guides to good use. We also hope to find the much endangered Blue Swallows again and hope the mining activity will not disturb their breeding. Other specials we hope to see are African Quail Finch, Ground Woodpecker and Red-winged Francolin.
What to bring : Remember your hat, binoculars, insect repellant , bird book, refreshments and a warm jacket in case it gets cold.
I will be watching the weather forecast and if it is likely to rain we will postpone the walk to the following weekend 22nd January 2011. I will advise everybody by e-mail by Saturday night.

Birding Outing: 11th/12th February 2012 - Newcastle & Seekoivlei
A visit to the roosting site of 30,000 Amur Falcons in Newcastle (about a 3hr drive from Mbabane) is planned for mid-February just before the Falcons depart to their breeding grounds in Mongolia. Truly a fantastic sight, coupled with some great birding on the Amajuba Birding Meander and at the Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve and wetland area near Memel. I am researching the accommodation options and will keep you posted.
The chance of last minute cancellation due to the weather is always there. When a birding event is cancelled the leader will not proceed to the designated meeting point. Therefore in dicey conditions, please use your cell/phone to check out the latest decisions. In particular, those who plan to join the outdoor activities at the alternative meeting point. |
