Venue Details
March 7 Ngwenya North & South

Ngwenya Mountain in the Malolotsja Nature Reserve, the crocodile shaped ridge near the border at Oshoek, is the second highest point (1828m) in Swaziland only surpassed by Emlembe at Bulembu at 1862m.

The walk starts from the car park in the middle of the iron ore mine, Swaziland’s answer to the “Big Hole” of Kimberley. The mine is certainly not what would be called an example of nature conservation, however it can’t be ignored. The result of the modern mining operations is there for everyone to see. The ancient mine, estimated at least 40 000 years old, is more modest. The information Centre is open for greater detail on the geology of the area.

The way to the top of the Ngwenya Mountain is over an old track from the open-cast mine with a very gentle slope. Situated on the Highveld grasslands one is surrounded by great views into the Motsjane Valley, Nkoyoyo Ridge, the barites mine, Emlembe, Silotwane and the Diepgezet mining areas across the border in Mpumalanga. Game might be encountered. To feel on top of the world, this is your opportunity, without any challenging climbing.

Meet at the Mbabane Club at 8.30 for prompt departure at 8.45. Bring adequate water, snacks, sun protection, including a hat and entrance fees to Malolotsja. Travelling 30 min. each way – hiking 4 hours.
